Major rivers in the state of Andhra Pradesh are Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and other rivers such as Pennar, Manjira, Nagavali, and Vamsadhara. The Godavari rises near Nasik in Maharashtra ( in the Western Ghats 50 miles (80 km) from the Arabian Sea) and courses generally eastward across the Deccan plateau, along the Maharashtra–Andhra Pradesh border . The tributaries of River Godavari accounts for the supply of water in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The irrigation-canal system that links the delta of Godavari with the delta of Krishna in the southwest makes this region the richest rice-growing regions in India. Catchment areas of the river Godavari extends to six states namely 

Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka as well as Odisha. In fact the number of dams that are constructed in the Godavari basin is the highest among all river basins in the country.
