The pride of Konaseema tourism- River Godavari, Andhra Pradesh

Major rivers in the state of Andhra Pradesh are Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and other rivers such as Pennar, Manjira, Nagavali, and Vamsadhara. The Godavari rises near Nasik in Maharashtra ( in the Western Ghats 50 miles (80 km) from the Arabian Sea) and courses generally eastward across the Deccan plateau, along the Maharashtra–Andhra Pradesh border . It flows across Andhra Pradesh state and then turns  south east before reaching the Bay of Bengal At this juncture it pours into tributaries which is the Gautami i to the north and the Vashishta to the south. The delta region which is formed between these two tributaries is the rich and fertile Konaseema region.  thanks to the bounty river Godavari houses scenic landscapes and flora fauna that attract tourists from all over the south of India. Resorts along the river especially in the Konaseema region have grown to be hotspots listed in The principal tributaries of the second largest river in India are Penganga, Pranahita, Sabari, Indravati, Manjeera and Manair.

Spiritual significance of the river-

Apart from Ganga and Yamuna, Godavari also holds the special religious importance in India. According to the ancient mythology the river Ganga needs to be paid a visit only after a visit to the Godavari. Godavari is also referred to as the ‘Ganga of the South’. Every twelve years, a huge festival called Pushkaram is held on the banks of the Godavari so as to worship and revere it. There are several pilgrimage places on the banks of the river Godavari. Two major places of worship on the banks of the river includes Trimbakeshwar temple, the ancient temple of Lord Shiva in Maharashtra and Bhadrachalam  the temple of Lord Rama. There are many more temples along the East Godavari and Konaseema region where one can visit temples of great significance. The Godavari has always been held as a special place of pilgrimage for many thousands of years.


Godavari and ecology in the region-

The tributaries of River Godavari accounts for the supply of water in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The irrigation-canal system that links the delta of Godavari with the delta of Krishna in the southwest makes this region the richest rice-growing regions in India. Catchment areas of the river Godavari extends to six states namely 

Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka as well as Odisha. In fact the number of dams that are constructed in the Godavari basin is the highest among all river basins in the country.

Tourism along Godavari-

The delta region of the river Godavari is largely known as. This region is similar to Kerala is terms of greenery backwaters and overall tranquility which is why there are a lot of luxury resorts are that growing in this belt. 

The region is surrounded by beautiful destinations such as Papi hills, the Kolleru Lake, Maredumilli Forest (as well as Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuary), the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary etc. There are also river cruises organized by AP tourism on the Godavari River up to Papi hills and Bhadrachalam.
